I now have a clearer idea of what Darcy meant, and where he got that impression from - thanks!

I must disagree slightly with your first example, though. IMO, Darcy is implying that women in general are bubbleheads whose main interest in life is dancing/socializing. For an intelligent women with more important priorities, that *is* being severe (even though it was a very common idea at the time).
