That was more or less Mrs. Bennet's interpretation--that he was insulting the country. I think he was just stating an obvious truth. Society was limited in the country. For someone who loved to observe human nature and laugh at their absurdities, this could be a problem. Lizzy could very quickly run out of new subjects of jest.

I don't think we, with our phones, internet, etc., etc., realize just how limited country society was. I think this was why gossip and news play such a big part in JA's novels.
