Yes!   Written by LisaS (4/16/2010 6:34 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, A great reader, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I love the way you put this together. I really have never quite been able to figure it out so found this very insightful.

Their talk of books has always been very confusing to me. Is he complimenting Lizzy or not? She has just stated she is not a great reader, then he says reading is important to him. Is this censure of her? I think not since it is obvious she does enjoy reading...she picked up a book to read before being distracted, she makes literary comments all the time, etc. But then why does she say she's not a great reader? Etc, etc. I always end up going around in circles trying to figure out what Darcy and Lizzy mean. In the end, I've never been quite sure. The only thing I am sure about is that Caroline ends up looking quite foolish, contradicting herself not only about how many ladies of accomplishment there are but also in her censure and then praise of reading.
