Wouldn't this be somewhat out of character   Written by Anselm (4/15/2010 7:01 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, penned by Stephanie

for Mr Bennet? Taking his family's affairs so seriously is something I don't really associate with him, certainly not in the first 12 chapters. The sole purpose of any communication with his wife is to amuse himself at her expense, right from what amounts to his practical joke on her (and the rest of his family) in the first couple of chapters. If this reading were true, it would break the mould somewhat. He seems basically to have retired from family life into his library, where he is really at home in his solitude.

That's not to say that his words taken on their own would not bear that interpretation - they certainly would.
