Just about a page & a half after Caroline's invitation to Jane, comes Jane's note to Lizzy about her illness. In contrast to CB's note, which summoned Jane to come & make herself useful entertaining the Binglettes as long as nothing more amusing offered, Jane's note is one of necessity, to explain why she isn't home, but to reassure that any alarm they might have had from a report about her illness is unwarranted. "--and, excepting a sore throat and headache, there is not much the matter with me." She could have meningitis, but in true self-effacing Jane fashion, she wants them to believe she's fine, really, & that her hostesses could not be more solicitous.
