So blinded -- and deafened -- by love?   Written by Kathi (4/14/2010 7:06 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, My perception is truly that, penned by Nancy Ann
Are you new?

I still think that you are making a mistake in assuming that Mrs. Bennet has always been as bad as she is now, that 25 years of the treatment that she gets from her husband has not made her worse than she otherwise might have been, or that had she been treated differently, she would not have calmed down. If it hadn't been for 25 years of such treatment, the family might not be stuck with such extremes now.

It's a little hard to believe that if Mrs. Bennet had been as you describe her 25 years ago, if she were, as you say, wired that way, that Mr. Bennet would ever have married her. I don't think she was ever a model of sense, and we don't know why Mr. Bennet married her, but it's hard to believe that Mr. Bennet wouldn't have noticed such behavior and realized how hard it would be to live with, if she had been as bad before he married her. People do get blinded by love, or lust, but that would have been ridiculous.

I think in another sense, this isn't really about Mrs. Bennet, it's about Mr. Bennet's character. A wife had a right to be treated with respect, and stirring her up (whether or not it is necessary) and making her look ridiculous is not treating her with respect.
