Goaded by Miss Bingley to go to the ball?   Written by Benedicte (4/14/2010 1:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Slighting Lizzy, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

Just a surmise: Caroline and Louisa might have insisted on D's going to the ball, in order to show off with (esp Caroline) and let the local bumpkins know how fashionable they are, a hint they might not take if only the ever friendly Bingley were there on his own.

To step in defence of Darcy since he has few champions so far ;-)let's not forget that his attitude, is viewed through the eyes of locals, and probably not by the Omniscient narrator. Some people continually give offence merely because they are socially inadequate, call it shyness or reserve, however generous and kind hearted they really are.

And what about possible preoccupations... but no more of it for fear of sliding into later chapters!
