Mr Bennet has met Bingley and knows how friendly he is. Why would he assume Bingley might prove to be unpleasant? On the other hand, there is no accounting for taste and Bingley might have taken a fancy to some other young lady than Jane - and I agree with Robbin's view that Mr Bennet would have enjoyed his wife's chagrin and the opportunity to wind her up about it. Which would not have been very nice but entirely consistent with his character.
