This idea of irony has really been brought out in more recent adaptations of JA's works on screen... the intros talk about the seriousness and consequences of women in 18th century England not marrying. It is the height of irony (and a genius of JA and why I think we reexamine her works repeatedly) that she would treat serious matters with seriousness they deserve with some of her silliest characters without treating the actual matter as silly!
