The Lack of Gentlemen   Written by Andrea Gayle (4/14/2010 3:40 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The militia may have been from Derbyshire, penned by Connie
Are you new?

If the militia were in Meryton in time to spread the gossip about Darcy's fortune (assuming that they are from Derbyshire and would know this information) then I can't imagine there would have been a lack of gentlemen, which would mean Lizzy would not have been sitting without a partner, which would prevent Darcy from insulting her.

I think it more likely that the news came from the servants. Darcy and the Bingleys must have been travelling with at least some personal servants from other establishments (ladies maids and valets and so on) who would likely gossip with the local servants who would pass the information on to the local populace.
