father to deny the use of the horse. And, I also agree that Mrs B. was not trying to ensure Jane an exteneded stay at Netherfield because of illness brought on by a long ride in the rain. If it rained after she arrived at her destination, she would have to spend the night. If she became ill, she would be under the same roof as Bingley, but wouldn't be able to see him (which is what happened). Her airy dismissal of the possible lethal result of a cold is a little harder to understand, except that she doesn't possess the most analytical of minds, and tends to also dismiss things that might thwart her plans.
