is that the good Merytonians were prepared to give him more credit than he deserved for good behavior due to his status. Had he been merely civil, he would have been considered charming, but since he was uncivil & behaved in ways inappropriate to the situation, he had farther to fall, & he fell all the way. He lacked noblesse oblige.
