Why do you think he was surprised   Written by Nina RG (4/13/2010 12:21 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, he would have given [her hand] to Mr. Darcy, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

that Elizabeth was near? He hadn't seen Sir William Lucas coming, but I don't think he was surprised about Elizabeth.

I agree that he probably always found dancing frivolous, annoying etc., but:
" Mr. Darcy stood near them in silent indignation at such a mode of passing the evening, to the exclusion of all conversation..." (Ch 6.) Up until now Darcy has not been particularly talkative, and at the Meryton Assembly he only talked to people of his own party, but now he is indignant that dancing precludes conversation. IMHO, Elizabeth is the reason for that: "He began to wish to know more of her, and as a step towards conversing with her himself, attended to her conversation with others." (Ch. 6).

Music and dancing could make it more difficult for him to "attend to her conversation with others", hence the silent indignation, IMHO.
