He's not physically ill or anything. Not being in the mood or in humour does not excuse a man when there is a shortage of gentlemen. According to the established codes, when there were more women than men, every gentleman was expected to help alleviate the situation of there not being enough male partners. If you walked into this situation, particularly as a stranger, and refused to do your duty then you were choosing to be deemed to be too proud. This is just how it was. Darcy knew this and could have cared less about the opinions of people whom he felt to be beneath him.
