Are you new?

I wonder if Author Austen was not simply telling us what we needed to know for the story with the financial info. She had the example of the 'large party from London' to laugh at the gossips; she did not need to repeat the humour.

However, had she wanted to segue into a story about Darcy fortune-hunting because he had run through the value of his large estate and was penniless, she certainly set it up well! We only seem to have gossip and hearsay to go on! ;)
