that the behaviour referred to for both gentlemen was in Meryton, only -- not within the social crowd of London. Could Bingley have really been liked everywhere by everyone? Seems too much merit, just as the "continually giving offence" seems too strong to apply to Darcy.

I shall ponder this some more, however. :-)
