I think you mean, we are told about the slight after the general consensus?

I do believe the reaction is more strong than it should have been. Perhaps we can attribute it to their dashed hopes when finding Darcy was not going to marry one of their daughters. (Or the fact that all the gossips were drunk by that time, and the emotions were running high! *chuckles*)
