Well, the city is more germ-y than the country, and Darcy and the Bingleys all spend a good part of each year in the confines and closeness of London. I could jump to the assumption that Jane REALLY caught the cold from Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Hurst's frequent socializing with her (not, of course, from Mr. Bingley!).
