I don't believe Darcy was forced to attend   Written by Christopher (4/12/2010 8:08 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, But why is Darcy cranky?, penned by Kathi

the assembly, though he does seem excessively cranky. If he did not intend to participate as a gentleman would be expected, he should not have gone to the assembly.

I see a couple of possibilities. Perhaps he attended in a passive-aggressive mode. He didn't really want to go, but felt obligated as Bingley's guest at Netherfield, and proceeded to be a grump while there.

Alternatively, he may have chosen to attend because he enjoyed the company of Bingley and his sisters and felt that "it wouldn't be so bad" to attend. Perhaps the ball turned out to be "worse" than he expected and it put him into a foul mood.

In either case, he went beyond the bounds of being a gentleman. Badly done, Darcy!
