] A whole hour is spent by the ladies before the gentlemen join them (BTW, what do they do meanwhile?)

Traditionally, the gentlemen would be having an after-dinner port or other libation alone before rejoining the ladies who then presided over the teatable. Why tea? My dear, we are speaking of the English! ;-)
