I agree - JA's description of Mr. and Mrs. B. (Ch. 1)   Written by Karen G (4/12/2010 4:34 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I think Mrs. Bennet is silly period, penned by Nancy Ann
Are you new?

I agree, Nancy Ann, that Mrs. Bennet is a bit addicted to anxiety and nerves.

I love JA's succinct description of both characters here (Ch.1):
"Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three-and-twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Her mind was less difficult to develope. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news."

Mr. B definitely was "pushing her button" (as my own dad would do to my mom from time to time) by indicating he wouldn't visit Mr. Bingley. And of course, since Mrs. B's "business" is to get her daughters married, she was extremely discontented to think that Mr. B might possibly be serious in not visiting - because it could be disasterous to her job, and she could do nothing about it. I could imagine Mrs. Bennet not happy with favoring Lizzy because she is often like her father, and at this point in time, she's not too happy with him!

I find it ironic, too, that Mr. Bennet finds himself annoyed when Mrs. Bennet is actually happy. Her report of how favorable Mr. Bingley was to Jane was something he could hardly stand hearing about! :) "For God's sake, say no more of his partners. O that he [Bingley] had sprained his ancle in the first dance!" (Ch.3)
