I think we must allow for Jane Austen's "brilliant wit" to shine through here a bit! You have to admit, while not necessary, this whole section is quite humorous.

And I think Mr. Bennet enjoys teasing his wife, who he knows is extremely silly. Jane Austen wrote lots of ridiculous characters, and Mrs. Bennet is one of them. :)
