It had been raining hard enough to get Jane sick just the day before, I would think even proper roads such that Mrs. Bennet would travel on would be extremely muddy. I think probably the road getting there was too round about for Lizzy and she went the quicker way over the fields. There had to be some kind of road getting from one house to the other, the sisters visited Jane (ch. 6) and they would have come by carriage.
