I believe Gilpin's principle about three being the most picturesque grouping was extremely *general*, and did not just apply to cows. ;-) Of course, I can see JA (and possibly Elizabeth too) having that in the back of her head when she wrote this scene!

Yes, I understand Gilpin was widely read and admired at the time.
