Beg to differ with Connie's assertion...   Written by Benedicte (4/12/2010 12:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Slighting Lizzy, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

"Is it possible that Darcy, after catching Lizzy's eye, is afraid she might think he was looking at her to admire her? Then, in order to protect himself from suspected interest in her, he hastily blurts out the insult in a voice he hopes she overhears?"

IMO the 1st ball takes place too early in the plot for Darcy to fear Lizzie's influence on him. We must wait for ch12 for that: "Elizabeth had been at Netherfield long enough. She attracted him more than he liked (...) He wisely resolved to be particularly careful that no sign of admiration should now escape him"
