Having been a British colony, South African schools and Universities still have some of the traditions. I too had a hostel 'mother'. Did they have initiation of first-years as we did? If they did, then I can understand the bond between Darcy and Bingley. Your mentor is the only person besides your fellow-first year who treats you kindly during that time. Being cut off from contact with your own family, you look up to that person for guidance and confide in them.
