I don't think Darcy set out to make sure she heard him, I don't think he is quite that bad, though he is plenty bad. I think that he didn't care. He probably knew she might hear him, he just didn't care if she did - she's so far beneath him and he's so caught up in his own pique that he's indifferent to the possible consequences of his statements.

Thank goodness Elizabeth has a strong sense of self and a good humor. Can you imagine what effect his statements could have had on a timid or insecure girl?

Definitely needs a SUTH. .-)
