I somehow doubt that Darcy's well-bred society with which he mixed had trully good manners and breeding. I expect they were all more or less like Caroline - and the type of people with whom Mary Crawford would have hung out. They all must have had airs, but little neighbourly acts. I am not defending him, but I think his definition of manners and good breeding must be different from that of the Meryton crowd.
