Mrs. Bennet exaggerates Darcy's offenses   Written by Connie (4/12/2010 10:35 a.m.)
Are you new?

Continuing the theme of hiding or stretching the truth, we have 2 instances of Mrs. Bennet exaggerating Darcy's offenses in these first chapters.

At the end of Ch. 3, she tells Mr. B, "with much bitterness and some exaggeration, the shocking rudeness of Darcy."

In Ch. 5, she says, "Mrs. Long told me last night that he sat close to her for half-an-hour without once opening his lips." Jane protests that she saw Darcy talk to Mrs. Long. Jane adds that he never talks much among strangers, but Mrs. B will not believe it.

Both these exaggerations serve to make Darcy's character look blacker than it otherwise might.
