He certainly did not care for the feelings of Elizabeth, but I'm not sure if he wanted her to hear. It was thoughtless and I sometime wonder whether he only did said it to get Bingley off his case and not bother him any more about dancing and that he didn't really think of Elizabeth at all; or whether he was actively trying to let these country folk know how much they are below him. Either way, he needs a SUTH.

On the other hand, since many other people heard his comment (Charlotte later remarks about it), he certainly did not lower his voice - so perhaps he did intend her to hear?
