Although I agree with you in stating that it is a horrid speech, I still believe we must alow for some excuse. He could not know he was being overheard as Lizzy was sitting near enough to overhear, but not to necessarily be so, they are after all at a dance.

However I agree with you that shyness or being ironic is not an excuse. He is a grown up man who should be ued to fine company. To make such a comment as this is not only impolite, but rather childish: to slight someone simply because of your own shyness is not behaviour a desirable man ought to display.
