I agree, there's just no excuse for this. Good manners and good breeding, which I am sure he claims for himself would prohibit such a thing as insulting a lady in this way and in public no less. This behavior is insupportable in my opinion. Shyness (which I don't believe), annoyance or irony are not reasons to potentially hurt someone's feelings or degrade them in front of friends and family nor indeed if they were alone.
