it was a slightly ludicrous variation on a standard type of Catholic miracle, perhaps indicating Walpole's sceptical purpose.

But *blood* in the form of trickles, stains, pools, or inundations, was to become the staple of the horror mode.

In 'Udolpho' Emily sees a *pool* of blood around a corpse, which she thought to be her aunt's body.

I see now the reason for showing 'all' that blood on NA1.
