I am beginning to appreciate HW's understanding of human nature in the middle of all this 'gothic horror', where one needs to 'suspend disbelief' as Line has so aptly put.
When the Friar told him he had reasons why he should forget Matilda -
He had little curiosity to learn the friar's reasons, and less disposition to obey them. The lovely Matilda had made stronger impressions on him than filial affection.
Like any other 'normal' youth. LOL!!! And arriving late for an appointment. :-D
So also was his 'rash' outburst 'Every heart will bless her'.
Methinks he loves Matilda, and finds Isabella attractive.
