I certainly agree with you about Theodore. He should get on the road or go back in the cell--and now, for heaven's sake!! And I agree that he is being overly dense about who's who.

But Frederic is a lot older than Theodore, and his having been on a crusade might have left him less than hail and hearty. And just because he went on a crusade doesn't mean he could fight. :)

And Frederic probably has been gone for a very long time. He might have even left for the crusade not long after his wife's death and Isabella's birth--as a way to go through mourning.
