In ch.3, Father Jerome returns to his monastary with events at the castle still unresolved, to discover that a) a serious rumour of unknown origin is going around that Hippolita is dead, and then b) that Isabella has disappeared. Seldom a dull moment in this book! Despite what we consider creaky old conventions, I agree that this story is definitely a page turner!
