Every now and then Manfred or the narrator (I’m not sure) tells us that Manfred’s heart can be touched but unfortunately it is usually only touched by his own problems. When he told the knights they saw before them the “most unhappy of men” and he began to weep I was sure he must sneaking a peek at the knights to see their reactions like Lucy Steele does to Elinor when she tells of her engagement to Mr. F. I am afraid that I have no pity for Manfred and must confess that I laughed not a little at his tears. :D
