Is this also the first soap opera?

Between the divorce and marrying the almost daughter-in-law, and the friar's long lost son, who looks like the ancestor in a painting, it seems like a soap opera to me. I do wish Matilda had a bit more backbone though. She is a bit hard to take at times.
