I had to read the entire dungeon-passageway-secret door scene a few times to make any sense of it. It seems that the helmet broke through the earth, allowed the dashing young peasant to escape and created a bit of light for the discovery of the trapdoor. It was all very convenient. I think it absolutely necessary that we all have a giant helmet on hand, providing it is a cooperative one, of course.
