I too was reminded of the General.   Written by Tate (1/24/2006 11:08 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I thought of General Tilney..., penned by Barbara

Although I don't think that he is quite the villain that Manfred so far seems to be, he does parallel him in some ways. Especially in Catherine's mind, when she thinks he has committed the crime of murder against his wife. In those moments he does become the Gothic villain, at least to Catherine.
