I was struck by the word "miracle" too. I wonder if the meaning of the word has changed since Walpole's time. In our day, a miracle is always supposed to be a positive thing, but maybe in his time it just meant an extraordinary and perhaps supernatural happening? Same thing with the changing meaning of the word "vulgur", as you pointed out.
