Are you new?

I actually didn't have any impression that HW meant for this to be humourous in any way, other than the way his domestics speak and act, which he provided for comic relief from the horror.

Actually, as I was snickering my way through the first chapter, I was thinking that it is Jane Austen herself who conditioned me to laugh at this kind of thing.
