I have read The Monk, so the name Matilda rang a bell. I don't have any idea if Lewis picked up this name from Walpole (the Matildas are very different in character--at least through chapter 1), but I looked into the name and it means "mighty warrior," or similar. And Hippolita was queen of the Amazons. So...I'm harboring a hope that the two of them join forces to beat the living daylights out of Manfred (perhaps with a giant toenail).

This is a very bizarre novel. I quite like it. :-D
