rusty hinges of doors, castle vaults, a subterraneous passage, a burning lamp and we mentioned the trap door ?

There appears to be an emphasis on medieval things in Otranto.

I think such ingredients with variations became the staple of Gothic romances in the 1790s'.

Oh, amazingly horrid indeed ! ;)
