which the heroine always hears, as Isabella heard in the vaults.

In 'Udolpho' Emily heard it every night accompanied with 'groans' and 'moans'.

I wonder if these sighings (and groans and moans) were sort of 'hollowy' sounds or 'sepulchral' or 'whispery' or...????
