Yes, Jacquez and Diego remind me alittle of Rosencrantz and Guildensten (?) in 'Hamlet' who seem vague charecters too.

I believe at this time the reader only knows him as 'a young peasant'.

As for Isabella, I wonder if she did stay by the hatch for the stranger?

Methinks she may have stayed to wait yet if she heard Manfred above, in fright she'd continue her flight through the subterrean passage...

Nail biting stuff isn't it ?
