Though it may not be so much what we read as how we read it...

I agree the first chapter of TCoO possesses all the hallmarks that came to be associated with C18th Gothic genre.

I noticed too, that much of the dialogue was rather melodramatic and stagey.
The jerky way servents Jacquez & Diego spoke, were they intended as comic relief ?
