Are you new?

. . . he might still become a very dependable clergyman, so long as the congregation runs on the principle of "Hear his advice and then do the opposite." ;-)

Seriously, he'd need to develop quite a bit of discernment to be fit for it. However, now that it's all off with Isabella and he won't be in the company of Thorpe, maybe he'll have time to settle down and grow some good sense.
