Now that chapter 30 is admissible, here's another mention of the meeting.

The general ... had accidentally inquired of Thorpe if he knew more of her than her name. Thorpe, most happy to be on speaking terms with a man of General Tilney’s importance, had been joyfully and proudly communicative;

I'm leaning toward the view that Thorpe was happy to find himself on speaking terms with the general for the first time.
