I agree, Rushworth is stupid but innocent, and is more a victim of heartlessness instead of being heartless himself. Another poster has compared John Thorpe with Robert Ferrars, and I think that is a more appropriate comparison, Robert, like John Thorpe, is also boastful, vain and dishonourable.
